Wu Jingwen graduated from the Animation Department of Jingdezhen Ceramic University in 2014. Then, she worked in animation production from 2014 to 2015 before founding her own ceramic studio in 2017.
Wu Jingwen views ceramics as a living material. Only through careful observation and thoughtful engagement can one truly enter a dialogue with clay. Her practice continually explores the relationship between ceramics and nature, and between matter and life.
Her works primarily feature black tones, enhanced with iron-oxide glazes that create rusted, textured surfaces. They evoke a sense of solitude while inviting intimate dialogue; observing them reveals their quiet strength. She also produces vibrant lacquer pieces and works with silver decoration.
“I am often asked what I intend to express through my work. In truth, I do not aim to convey any personal experience—these are insignificant. What I wish to share is the sense of life these vessels give me. Any theoretical or scholarly explanation is superfluous. Thousands of factors influence the creation of a piece: temperature, climate, humidity, time, clay, glazes… I am merely one of these factors, or perhaps simply a discoverer.”
